Lecture - The Abyssinian Expedition: Magdala at 150

Anne Parsons, John Mellors, Helen Papworth

Tuesday 22nd May 2018

7:00pm, Khalili Lecture Theatre, Main Building, SOAS, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG - Public lecture (all welcome)

April 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the British Expedition to Abyssinia, the fall of Magdala, and the death of Emperor Tewodros.

A large international conference was organised by Gondar University (in partnership with other Ethiopian institutions) and took place in Gondar, Debre Tabor, and Magdala in April. This evening’s event will be an opportunity for some papers contributed by British authors to be re-presented to a UK audience. Subjects will include discussion of a small manuscript notebook written during the march to Magdala, embroidered dresses collected during the expedition, and the role of HM Stanley as the special correspondent for the New York Herald.

Capacity at the venue is limited, so please reserve your place soon to avoid disappointment.
