The Anglo-Ethiopian Society
Poetry Evening - Greetings to the People of Europe!
Alemu Tebeje, Chris Beckett, and Friends
Monday 22nd October 2018
6:30 to 9:00pm, Basement, The Poetry Café, 22 Betterton Street, Covent Garden, WC2H 9BX - Free public event (all welcome)
The Anglo-Ethiopian Society and Tamrat Books are teaming up to launch Greetings to the People of Europe, the first bilingual collection by exiled poet and journalist, Alemu Tebeje. Alemu left Ethiopia in the early 1990s and his witty, moving, politically pointed poems have been widely published in Amharic, Chinese and English, as well as being projected on buildings in Denmark, Italy, USA and UK by the international artist, Jenny Holzer.
Alemu lives next door to Grenfell Tower in west London and wrote one of the most dramatic poems to be included in the recent Poems for Grenfell Tower anthology. Alemu’s first collection also includes the script of a radio-sketch commissioned by BBC Radio 4 in 2017, Tamrat in the Cyclops Cave.
The evening will be introduced by Society trustee and founder of Tamrat Books, Chris Beckett, and there will be readings of Alemu's poems by the poet himself and by friends, including Hama Tuma, Makonnen Wodajeneh, Grenfell editor Rip Bulkeley and members of the cast of Tamrat in the Cyclops Cave.
Entry is free and refreshments can be purchased from the bar.
Capacity at the venue is limited, so please reserve your place soon to avoid disappointment.
