Lecture - The Contemporary Fine Art Landscape in Ethiopia

Rakeb Sile

Monday 2nd September 2019

7:00pm, Ethiopian Community in Britain, 2a Lithos Road, London NW3 6EF - Public lecture (all welcome)

It is an exciting time for visual art from the African continent with unprecedented international growth and attention, and Ethiopia is one of the most exciting and untapped countries in this area. This brings a lot of opportunities for our artists, our contemporary culture and our nation as a whole. However, structural issues at home are holding us back from making the leap forward. Rakeb Sile will discuss her experience of founding a gallery in Ethiopia, explaining what must be done to really put Ethiopia on the global map for visual arts.

Rakeb Sile is the co-founder and director of Addis Fine Art a pioneering gallery based in Addis Ababa and London. Named as one of 27 "Most Important Young Galleries in the World" (Artsy, 10 June 2019), Addis Fine Art has quickly become one of the leading galleries from Africa, facilitating critical engagement with the local and mainstream art markets, championing an underrepresented, yet rich space in modern and contemporary fine art.

Doors will open at 6:00pm with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits available. Capacity at the venue is limited, so please reserve your place soon to avoid disappointment.
