Theatre has long been an important voice in both Ethiopia and Eritrea. This talk will focus on moments in the post-imperial period when it has discussed ideas, politics and aesthetics, often speaking on behalf of a much wider, relatively voiceless populace.

Drawing on nearly 40 years of theatrical engagement with these nations Jane Plastow will consider why theatre has been so significant for metropolitan populations in both countries - and why the world knows so little about one of the most popular, prolific and sophisticated art forms to come out of Africa.

Jane Plastow is Professor of African Theatre at the University of Leeds. Her research, teaching, and theatre making have focused on East Africa for over three decades.

Please reserve your place soon to avoid disappointment.
