Ethiopia is again in a generational crisis. Repetition is an apt term because, while the actors may change, their roles do not; nor do the issues underlying the crisis, the process of resolution and their outcomes. All of which follow the same scenario, which is scripted by the country's history.
Whenever a crisis occurs a 'hero' appears who generates unrealistic expectations of a lasting resolution. Carlyle's precept of the 'hero's' role in shaping history notwithstanding, Ethiopia's modern political history follows a course which guides the 'hero', whoever he is, towards an outcome that unfailingly sets the stage for the next crisis a generation later.
John Markakis is retired professor of African studies in the University of Crete. He has devoted a professional lifetime of over five decades to the study of political development in the Horn of Africa, and has published several books and many articles on the region.
