Haggai Erlich will discuss five decades of hopes and disillusions that he experienced as he tried to understand the "mysterious magnetism" of that great country.

His most recent book Greater Tigray and the Mysterious Magnetism of Ethiopia, Hurst Publishers, was published in October 2023.

Haggai Erlich is Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University, and former head of Middle Eastern History studies at the Open University of Israel. Haggai completed his BA studies in Tel Aviv University in General History and History of the Middle East and Africa, and his MA studies in the Hebrew University. In 1973 he received his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he wrote his thesis on the History of Ras Alula, under the guidance of professors Richard Gray and Edward Ullendorff. He has written dozens of books and articles on the history of the Horn of Africa and was the 2010 Landau Prize recipient in African Studies.
